V&A Dundee – Inches Carr Trust Resource Centre and Exhibition pop-up shop

Following our involvement in delivering V&A Dundee in collaboration with Kengo Kuma & Associates, and after the main building’s construction was completed, PiM.studio was appointed to design some of the interior spaces of the project: the Inches Carr Trust Resource Centre, the pop-up shop for the exhibition galleries foyer, the main Information Desk, as well as to select the public seating around the museum and to design custom donation boxes, and to select furniture for the DC Thomson Learning Centre.

The Inches Carr Trust Resource Centre is a lounge/meeting space located in the museum’s second floor circulation area between the restaurant and the Learning Centre. This space allows everyone to take a break during their visit to V&A Dundee and relax while looking at design books and magazines. The materials, fabrics and leathers we selected for the furniture in this space create a relaxing experience for visitors of all ages.

The exhibition pop-up shop located in the foyer between the Scottish Design Galleries and the exhibition galleries is a flexible and modular system allowing the retail space to adapt re-configure as required for each exhibition and to be transformed (or temporarily removed) for special events.

The museum Information Desk at the main entrance, designed in collaboration with Kengo Kuma, reflects the striated shapes of the building and is realised with a special through-oak plywood giving it a beautiful feeling and touch.

We have selected long oak benches to provide seating areas all around the building and in the temporary galleries. These complement the integrated benches we had designed at the base of the wooden panels on the main hall space and offer plenty of opportunities to visitors to sit and rest during their visit

We have specified furniture for the DC Thomson Learning Centre, including the picnic room colourful tables and benches where schools and families can relax and have their packed lunch in a fun and friendly space.
