Shatwell Library, Pleated Architecture
Proposal for Shatwell Farm, Somoerset, 2019
Our project establishes a gentle connection between two libraries/containers originally designed by the visionary architect Cedric Price. Inspired by the fluidity of accordion-like structures often seen in airport boarding areas, we’ve crafted a playful, dynamic space that weaves together the two unyielding metal shipping containers. This design not only bridges the libraries but also harmonizes with the pleated façade of our contemporary intervention, beautifully contrasting with the corrugated surfaces of the container exteriors.
Inside, this new soft space serves as more than just a passage between libraries; it offers a serene and ephemeral haven for researchers immersing themselves in the treasure trove of knowledge within these small spaces. The interior is thoughtfully equipped with essential amenities such as a modest bathroom, a dedicated study area, and a comfortable sleeping arrangement.
Our project not only pays homage to the vision of Cedric Price but also pushes the boundaries of architectural creativity, seamlessly merging functionality with aesthetic appeal. It stands as a testament to the transformative power of architecture in uniting the past and the present while providing a unique and comfortable retreat for scholars on their quest for knowledge.
